Christmas 2010

Who are Gilbert & Sullivan?

What do we do?

Why do we do it?

Do you already know about Gilbert & Sullivan?

Do you think that maybe the sort of music they wrote is dull and out of date - that it’s no longer relevant and not something you would want to listen to or sing?

Or maybe you haven’t got a clue what we are on about - and why should you?

We hope to show that the music of Gilbert & Sullivan is still worth singing, still worth watching and that performing their amazing, sometimes bizarre works can be enormous fun!

‘Three little maids from school are we,
Pert as a schoolgirl well can be,
Filled to the brim with girlish glee.’
(The Mikado)
Note: Seems to be most effective when sung in amateur productions by ladies of somewhat senior years - particularly if they take themselves seriously.

‘She may very well pass for forty-three
In the dusk with the light behind her!’
(Trial by Jury)

‘If a man can’t forge his own will, whose will can he forge? (Ruddigore)

Christmas 2010

Singing carols at the Burgess show room in Lowestoft is becoming something of a tradition, but this year we have been singing at the Market Gates Shopping Centre in Great Yarmouth as well.

A small group of members sang at the late night shopping evening on Wednesday 1st December. If you missed us then there will be a repeat performance on Wednesday 22nd December (between 5:00pm and 9:00pm approximately).

This was a great opportunity not only to add to the Christmas atmosphere on a particularly bleak, cold night, but also to promote the Society and let people know we exist. (We did also hold a promotional day during November, talking to passers by and giving out promotional material.)

It turned out not to be the busiest of shopping nights - probably due to the awful weather rather than our singing, but plenty of people stopped to listen and some even joined in.

Two Recruits  from the late night shoppers join the singers - and they sang beautifully!

Although it was the purpose of the evening, the Society also collected generous donations of £25 from the shoppers - more importantly we hope we added to the Christmas spirit and that those who listened and joined in appreciated our efforts.

Burgess
Saturday 4th December was our day at the Burgess showroom. This is always an enjoyable event, entertaining the shoppers, mulled wine and mince pies and a chance to show our appreciation amongst the crockery and kitchenware.
