Peter Murray

W.S. Gilbert’s Quotes of the Week
(Read more here)

‘Three little maids from school are we,
Pert as a schoolgirl well can be,
Filled to the brim with girlish glee.’
(The Mikado)
Note: Seems to be most effective when sung in amateur productions by ladies of somewhat senior years - particularly if they take themselves seriously.

‘She may very well pass for forty-three
In the dusk with the light behind her!’
(Trial by Jury)

‘If a man can’t forge his own will, whose will can he forge? (Ruddigore)

Peter Murray - Musical Director Until March 2011

Peter Murray Musical DirectorThe Great Yarmouth G&S Society is very fortunate to have had the services of Peter Murray as Musical Director until he stood down at the AGM in March 2011.

Peter’s knowledge and experience from a career in music, including plenty of G&S, were invaluable to the Society during.

Peter’s studies were at St. Andrew's University and when he began his musical career it was with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company as Assistant Conductor.

Peter Murray ConductingHe was then a conductor and musical director for theatre shows all over the country. In London's West End, his shows included 'Jesus Christ Superstar', 'Happy End', and 'Kismet'.

Peter Murray ConductingShows in Holland included 'The Mikado' and 'My Fair Lady'. ‘The Pirates of Penzance' was performed in the USA.

Peter also conducted the BBC Concert Orchestra at the International Festival of Light Music and  for the popular 'Friday Night is Music Night' on Radio 2 he was a regular conductor.

He is a prolific arranger. He has arranged all the Gilbert and Sullivan operas and 'Bugsy Malone' for Warner-Chappell. (In 2009 the Great Yarmouth G&S Society was  privileged to be given the chance to perform some of Peter’s lovely arrangements of a selection of Rodgers and Hammerstein pieces as part of the concert programme.)

His recordings include all the Gilbert and Sullivan operas and 'The Songwriters' for BBC Enterprises.

He is now Director of Music at St. Catherine's, Ludham, (pictured below) where the Society have performed under his direction, as well as being a very busy teacher.
